Passover has deep ecological roots and underpinnings. The Jewish calendar has kept us connected to the earth and its seasons for millennia, despite our urban and suburban ways of living in modern centuries. We are a people of the land, agrarian in our sacred story, Torah, and liturgy. Our values and ethics are rooted in our responsibility to care for Earth as well as her inhabitants. Heeding this call, a growing number of modern Jews have returned to our sacred roots through thoughtful and intentional connection with land, ecology, farming, sustainable practices, and environmental justice.
Guided by Rabbi Jessica Shimberg and The Promise of the Land, an Earth-centered hagaddah created in recent years by Rabbi Ellen Bernstein, our Earth Seder will provide a meaningful and shared opportunity and more nuanced framing in which to explore an Earth-informed view of freedom.
Please register for the seder to ensure your place at the table. Your registration will offer an opportunity to purchase a copy of the Haggadah and a vegan meal as well as a natural beeswax Havdalah candle. More information about purchasing or bringing dinner will be provided via email to those who register. To express interest in and register for the Earth Seder, follow this link. Registration deadline for food is April 11th.
